Cone Shaped Hydrangea Flower. One of the most popular plants for beautiful, rich pastel colors and full flowers is the hydrangea. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably Korea, China, and Japan.
Cone-shaped flowers are three-dimensional blooms that taper evenly from the base to apex of the flower to form a conical appearance.
Common selections: 'Limelight', Pinky Winky, Vanilla Strawberry, Bobo, Little Quick Fire, 'Grandiflora' (commonly called PeeGee).
On this edition of Get It Growing, LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dan Gill introduces you to a new type of hydrangea - one with cone-shaped flowers. Flower structure There are three types of hydrangea flowers: * globe-shaped mopheads * flat clusters of lacecaps * cone-shaped panicles (particularly Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea quercifolia). Hydrangea paniculata, distinguishable by its cone shaped blooms, flowers on the current year's growth (wood) and is pruned much harder in late winter/early spring.
